Originally based in the old-time flavor of the Carter Family, The Hanes Family has put together a collection of "world mountain music," performing songs from Appalachia, the Marin and Scottish Highlands, mainland Europe and the Lower East Side. Creating new arrangements with rich vocal harmonies, guitar, bass, mandolin, banjo and fiddle, the Hanes agree that the best songs are about the highwaymen, hard-up hobos, ne'er-do-wells, femme fatales, forlorn losers in love and god-forsaken believers who inhabit the dark side of every mountain. Heirs to an underwear empire, The Hanes Family have opted to dedicate themselves to the support of music in all its varied forms.

Lurlene Velveeta Hanes (aka Heather Davison) vocals, weird noises, recognized her musical gift after a 36-hour imprisonment at the bottom of the family well.

Woleen Hanes (aka Sara Glaser) vocals, guitar, penny whistle, left her husband, Reverend Dimsdale Hanes, and their nine children to pursue her life-long dream of attending The Grand Ole Opry.

Rutherford B. Hanes (aka Bill Nickell) guitar, vocals, mouth harp, learned everything he knows about his craft on a box car ride from Chicago to Skokie.

Lee Harvey Hanes (aka Peter Gillette) bass, vocals, was adopted into the family as part of a witness protection program; he handles all of our business affairs.

Hans Hanes (aka Michael Stadler) fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, vocals, formerly played second fiddle in a one-man band.

Cousins Rosie-May Rosie-May-Not Hanes (Catherine Rose Crowther), Biphidus Acidopholus Hanes (Leslie Jackson), and Goyder Hanes (Jeff Hobbs) grace our stage on special occasions, adding vocals, step-dancing and fiddle.

OuR CD

"The Hanes Family does it real nice, like—with beautiful,
spare harmonic vocals, and infused with humor.
Their album mixes traditional ballads with original pieces."
